The Defenders were founded in 1981 in New York City as a local club within Dignity/NY and then was established as a national club in 1987 by DignityUSA. It was formed to provide leathermen and leatherwomen who are interested in spirituality with a place for fellowship and suppers. Today, with five clubs around the United States, the Defenders is a growing movement within the leather scene.
